Ace the Interview

Attitude goes a long way, so approach every interview with one thought in mind—"I want to work here!" Of course, you'll need to hear all about the job, meet some of the people and receive an offer before you can actually decide if you really do want the job. However, in order to get that far in the first place, you need to convince the employer that you are the candidate they want. In essence, you need to "sell" yourself; to do that, you need to convey a positive, confident outlook. Here are some other things to keep in mind:

  • Arrive promptly, or even a little early, for your interview.
  • Stand until invited to sit, make good eye contact, and keep your head up and your back straight.
  • During the interview, present a confident, relaxed image. Leave any troubles at home.
  • By considering the questions you might be asked in advance, you will be more prepared to answer them. For example, if asked to tell an employer about yourself, how would you respond?
  • When answering questions, be sincere, honest and forthright—but be brief. Be positive in all of your replies, especially regarding experience.
  • During the interview, be sure to convey any strengths or positive qualities that will bring you closer to your objective—a job offer!
  • Listen, express interest and ask questions.
